From Sunshine to Slippers, from Beach Days to the Hills Garlic Fest

Fall is definitely in the air. Not only do I want to wear slippers around the house, but the biggest sign of fall happened a few days ago. No, I don’t mean the 20% off everything sale at Laurel Tree Fabric and Fibre. I mean the Hills Garlic Fest.

In my way of thinking, it is the best Sunday of the year. If Christmas happens to fall on a Sunday, then there’s competition. Hills Garlic Fest is a fun day of shopping and eating and, of course, garlic. Rain or shine, it’s always wonderful, but it’s also a sign that summer is coming to an end.

I love summer. I love the heat. I am always sorry to see it end.

This summer was beautiful! There was no smoke, no fires in our area, and just enough rain to keep everything bright and green. It was hot. We complained because it was hot. Every year in February, when it is definitely not hot, I laugh at myself for promising I won’t complain when the heat comes. Then, of course, I complain.

The heat and rain were great for gardens, flowers, and fruit trees. A few years ago, my husband and I planted a peach tree. This year we got many, many peaches.

Over the summer, I celebrated how fortunate I am to live in Canada. I made a beautiful bolster cushion that celebrates this country.

Beyond that, I spent little time in my studio. Despite planning to get lots of quilting and sewing done, I didn’t. I can’t say I’m surprised; the weather was just too beautiful to stay inside.

But now I’m thinking about fall: about crocheting a sweater, sewing a new skirt, and making a lovely quilted throw.

I have a beautiful linen-cotton fabric that I plan to use for a dress. I also started a jelly roll rug this spring that’s patiently waiting for me to return to it.

Then, who knows? I’m excited to make Bessy the Scrappy Cow and Gertie the Scrappy Giraffe, because they look like so much fun (see picture). Or I may start Home is Where My Flock Is, because it combines quilting and embroidery. A winter sweater is without a doubt on the list too. I’m not sure of the colour yet, though I’m leaning toward navy blue.

Regardless of what I decide on, it will be good to get back to the things I love. I’m looking forward to fall and to creating again.

I hope all of you had a wonderful summer, and hopefully I’ll see you soon.
